The short answer: yes, if it isn’t cared for properly. But there’s more to the story — and it’s easy to prevent.
Linen is a fabric we return to again and again — not just for its breathable quality and natural elegance, but for how it feels on the skin and moves with the body.
Why Does Linen Shrink?
Linen is made from flax, a strong natural fiber with a slightly looser weave. When exposed to high temperatures or agitation, the fibers tighten, which can cause the fabric to shrink — especially if it hasn’t been pre-washed.
At Karmina, we work exclusively with pre-washed linen and linen blends, meaning your garments are less likely to shrink if you wash them with care. Still, linen is a living material — natural, responsive, and best treated gently.
How to Wash Linen (Without Shrinking It)
The key to keeping your linen garments in their original shape is to wash them mindfully. Here’s how we recommend caring for your pieces:
Machine wash cold or at 30°C on a gentle cycle
Use a mild, natural detergent
Avoid fabric softeners and bleach
Air dry flat or hang to dry
If using a dryer, choose low heat only, and remove the item while slightly damp
And here’s something you might have noticed:
When linen is wet, it can feel stiff and almost like paper. Don’t be alarmed — this is completely normal. As it dries, the fabric softens again and returns to its familiar texture and fluid drape.
What About Linen Blends?
Linen blends, such as linen-cotton or linen-viscose, offer a beautiful balance of texture and softness. These combinations tend to shrink less and feel smoother on the skin — perfect for everyday wear. Many of our pieces, like those in the Capsule Collection, are crafted from these thoughtful blends.
A Fabric That Ages Beautifully
One of the gifts of linen is that it gets better with time. With each wash, linen becomes softer without losing its integrity. It’s a fabric that ages gracefully — just like a favorite book or pair of shoes that carry your story.
So will linen shrink? It might — but it doesn’t have to. With proper care, your linen pieces will last for years and become more comfortable every time you wear them.
