Keep Your Swimwear in Top Shape: A Guide to Washing and Storing Your Swimsuit

A day at the beach or a dip in the pool is a summer staple. But what happens when it’s time to clean your swimsuit? Swimwear requires a bit more care than your regular clothes to keep it looking its best. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly wash and store your swimsuit to extend its life and keep it looking as good as new.

 Rinse Immediately

After swimming, rinse your swimsuit as soon as possible in cold, fresh water. This helps remove any chlorine, salt, sand, or body oils that can damage the fabric over time. If you can, it’s best to do this right at the beach or pool before you head home.

Storing Your Wet Swimsuit

If you can’t wash your swimsuit right away, it’s important to store it properly. Avoid leaving your wet swimsuit in a plastic bag or wrapped in a towel for a long period of time, as this can encourage the growth of mildew and bacteria, and can also cause the colors to bleed. Instead, consider using a mesh bag or a specially designed wet bag for swimwear. These bags allow air to circulate and can help prevent odours and mildew.

Hand Wash

While it might be tempting to throw your swimsuit in the washing machine, hand washing is the best way to clean it. Fill a sink or basin with cold water and add a gentle, bleach-free detergent. Submerge your swimsuit and gently work the soap into the material. Let it soak for up to 30 minutes.

Rinse Thoroughly

Drain the soapy water and rinse your swimsuit under cold water until the water runs clear. Be sure to remove all soap as it can leave residues that may damage the fabric.

 Dry Properly

Never wring out your swimsuit as this can stretch the fibres and ruin its shape. Instead, lay it flat on a clean towel, roll the towel up and gently press to remove excess water. Unroll the towel and leave the swimsuit flat to dry, away from direct sunlight and heat which can fade the colors and break down the fabric.

Store Correctly

Once your swimsuit is completely dry, store it flat in a drawer. Avoid folding or rolling it, which can cause creases or wrinkles in the fabric.

Things to Avoid

Avoid using a dryer, iron, or any type of heater to dry your swimsuit. The heat can break down the elastic fibres and cause the swimsuit to lose its shape. Also, avoid using bleach or harsh detergents, as these can damage the fabric and fade the colours.

With these tips, you can keep your swimsuit looking its best all summer long. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in extending the life of your swimwear. Happy swimming!
